For the travelers who have never visited New York City and are concerned about finding an affordable hotel in New York, rest assured there are some reasonable hotel rates to be found. For one, New York City is a massive city full of all varieties of deals and offerings. Hotels are no different. There are cheap hotels in New York City along with very posh, luxurious hotels in New York. Then there is everything in between!
Since New York is the largest metropolitan city in the United States, you will find variety at the least. Variety in food, entertainment, art, education, commerce, retail and accommodations. Some of the national chains offer up budget hotels in New York just as the boutiques provide discounts. Howard Johnson Express Inn is an example of a national chain that is a great bargain in New York. Relative to other price points on hotel rooms in NYC, this hotel is definitely one of the more affordable hotels in New York City.
Another affordable hotel in New York City from a major national chain is the Comfort Inn. They have several locations. There is one located within walking distance of the Jacob Javits Convention Center (we did a video on another post and this hotel was in the shoot). The Comfort Inn Central Park West has also been a big hit with people needing to stay in an affordable hotel in New York.
Marriott is another brand name hotel with affordable rates in some of their New York properties. Many people think Marriotts are too pricey or luxurious for their budget travel needs yet Marriott comes up often with discounts and bargains. And it’s a little known fact that some of the Marriott Hotels will negotiate rates with you! We love that. Just ask for a discount and see if they can accommodate your budget.
We are continually surprised by people who won’t plan a vacation to New York City for fear of being robbed at high rates on their accommodations. Keep looking; the affordable hotels in New York City are waiting for your calls!
The Hampton Inn in Madison Square Garden is a great find. As with all Hampton Inns, it provides all the basic amenities for a modern traveler but they still keep their rates so low. I really like the Hampton Inn chain and find them to be dependably low-budget friendly. The one near Times Square in New York is located on 31st Street and is within walking distance of Times Square, Penn Station and the Convention Center. Did I mention food? This property is also close to a variety of great New York food places and definitely qualifies as a discount hotel in New York.
The Novotol Hotels chain of facilities spans around the world. They have properties in Canada, the U.S., Central America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia. Literally all over the world. You would think getting a discounted rate at this hotel chain, particularly in New York City, would be impossible. Not so. In fact, as we write this post we see discounts on hotels up to 45% off regular rates.
Their location on 52nd Street in Times Square is plump in the middle of the theater district. It is possible to get room rates for less than $280. I don’t think that’s cheap, however I do think it is a great discount rate for a quality hotel and a quality hotel chain, especially in New York and especially near Times Square. Novotol Hotels can be considered a discount hotel in New York near Times Square yet you can do better elsewhere if you are looking for rates that qualify for a cheap hotel in New York City.
The New Yorker Hotel on 8th Avenue near 34th falls into the category of discount New York hotels. I recently walked by the New Yorker and couldn’t bring myself to walk inside. (see my video post on Cheap New York Hotels to see street shots of The New Yorker). I know that some wonderful hotels can be real treasures once inside but I did not get good vibes from this property. However, I looked it up later and it is billed as having small rooms but all the necessary things that make up a perfectly good hotel room. Its’ location is terrific being so near Penn Station and Times Square and the Jacob Javits Convention Center. I walked past this hotel on my way to The Element, a Westin property. I loved this hotel.
We will be back with more sightings of cheap or discount hotels in New York city.
We got such a super rate at The Element when we attended the 2011 Toy Fair at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The Element was close enough to the Center that we walked to and from the Show every day. The hotel was terrific. Not only did it qualify as a discount hotel in New York – important to me – but everything about it was contemporary, clean and efficient as you’ll see in the following video.
The room we stayed in was very small but well done. There was a small refrigerator and sink that we hadn’t known about but they came in handy. The bathroom was contemporary and outfitted with glass shower enclosure and off-white Italian marble from floor to ceiling. Very nice.
We had a couple of challenges we imposed on the hotel staff and they responded so well. I would have no hesitation in coming back to this property again. We had dinner right around the corner at a small Italian restaurant but I can’t for the life of me remember its name. I do remember that the owner made and bottled his own wine and served it along with other brands. Is that common in New York or will this give someone a clue to remind me the name of this restaurant?
The video below is short but gives you a glimpse of the street environment around The Element and a brief tour.
Finding a really cheap New York hotel is tricky but possible. Although traveling to such an expensive city might be overwhelming for people with tight budgets, there are ways. The New Yorker is a favorably priced cheap hotel in New York. Another recommendation is the Ramada Inns which offer promotions that are often extremely good. They do not have the best quality reviews but, essentially, they are just fine. The rooms they have are clean and each room has a private bathroom with cable TV. The Colonial House in Chelsea and the Super 8 in Times Square are both also good really cheap New York hotels.
Finding a cheap hotel in New York, means that you have to look at a price range of below $200 per night. There are cheap hotels in Tribeca, Manhattan, Chelsea, Murray Hill West Village, Midtown, and Times Square so don’t get discouraged.
Another way of saving money, as well as staying in cheap hotels NYC, is to contact the “Big Apple Greeters.” These are active volunteer residents of NYC, who have made themselves available to give the traveler insider tips. Not only will they provide helpful advice on how to find cheap hotels in New York, they also conduct tours for private groups of two to six people. Each person in the group is issued with a MetroCard Fun Pass, and this allows unlimited travel on the New York bus and subway system. Your greeter will then show you how to travel with the transport system, the most extensive transport system in the US.
Staying in a cheap hotel in New York will save you money certainly, but you can also save money on tickets to the performing arts, transportation, tours and other kinds of entertainment. If you are planning a city trip to New York, do not settle on paying for full price for these things. Even museums offer discounts and specials.
Finding a cheap hotel in New York or cheap hotels in Manhattan is easily accomplished; it just takes the right research to know that this type of accommodation is available.

Looking for a cheap hotel in New York City? You may be surprised at how many you can find.
New York City is one of the most visited cities in the world but visitors pay a hefty price to visit. We always like to look for discounts on hotels in New York City and others want to make sure they don’t overpay as well. That’s not where we want to spend out money when we visit New York, so we are always looking for discounts on New York City hotels.
It may seem obvious but we have found some of the best deals on hotels in NYC through the brand name travel sites such as CheapTravel, Travelocity, Orbitz and Expedia. At the very least, you will get a sense for what is a bargain for a New York Hotel and how much they think it’s worth. It’s a pain, we know, but we have had good luck in our research because the deals are out there but often very hidden. Deeply hidden.
One thing we do in addition to our search with travel sites is to go straight to the big hotel chains to see what deals they are providing. I recently did that and uncovered a really great deal at the Element, a hotel by Westin, part of the Starwood family. We have not stayed there yet but I will be posting here after our trip. Other chains are Wyndham, Sheraton, New Yorker, Super 8, Best Western, Radisson, Hampton Inn and many others.
Where will you be visiting in your trip to New York City? Where you stay will have an effect on the prices you will have to pay. New York City can be categorized into several areas and these areas effect your hotel fees.
Do you want to stay in an upbeat and trendy part of the City? If so, then there are cheap hotels in Soho and Chelsea.
If you are challenged at finding a cheap New York City hotel, you may want to consider a New York hostel. Hostels have been provided for decades and are still going strong. Included in the fee is a free breakfast. If you are traveling with children, a hostel is probably not want the best place for you.
Don’t give up or give in because there are cheap New York City hotels waiting for your attention. Don’t let anyone tell you that you have to spend a fortune in New York. You can, of course, but you don’t have to.
Question by Rich P: Best discount hotel for New York city visit?
What is the best hotel for under $ 90 to stay at newark intl for visit to NYC at the end of June?
When looking for a discount hotel, New York City offers almost too many choices. So how do you make the best decision when you have never been to the Big Apple and are unfamiliar with the city layout and the neighborhoods?
Well, there are two ways to approach this topic and I will cover both of them.
Location, Location, Location Some travel experts will tell you that location is everything and that you should chose an accommodation near the sights that you are interested in visiting. They state that you don’t want to end up in a hotel across town from everything you want to do and see, because you will spend all of your time on foot and on the subway or hailing a cab.
So if this is your point of view, then the following information may help you.
If you want to be in the middle of the action, you should look for the most affordable discount hotel New York City (or Manhattan to be specific) supplies. There are hotels and hostels that offer great rates and amenities throughout this area. Deals are easy to spot (and are everywhere) on the internet.
Lower Manhattan: If you want a really low priced discount hotel New York City won’t let you down for this location. You will also be near Soho, China Town, Little Italy, Wall Street, Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and Wall Street.
Midtown Manhattan (East and West Side): The East Side of Midtown Manhattan would be a likely location for a higher priced accommodations, but don’t despair a great discount hotel New York City supplies in this area is available as a hostel. If you love to shop or even window shop, this is the place for you. You can find high priced fashion and dining to match.
On the other hand, if you are interested in a more exciting night life and no sleep, try the West Side of Midtown Manhattan. Not only does it have Times Square and Broadway, it also has affordable lodging as well. If you like to walk on vacations, then this is the area for you because you can get nearly anywhere you want to go on foot.
Upper Manhattan (East and West Side): A hotel on the Upper East Side will cost you a pretty penny unless you search for a great discount hotel. New York City (fortunately) has them everywhere. This is the location of the City’s finest museums. Central Park divides the East from the West and the farther you go west from the Park, the more affordable the discount hotel New York City provides.
Just a place to sleep Other travel experts will tell you that the deal is everything. Their philosophy is that only a few New York tourists spend a lot of time in their hotel rooms. This is specifically focused on those people who basically only use their hotel rooms to sleep, shower and change clothes in order to go out again.
They suggest that you then consider an accommodation that is slightly outside of the “hot spot” since transportation (fabulous subway system, taxis, private car, etc) is easily accessible and readily available most of the time 24/7. You can save a lot of money when you look for a discount hotel New York City offers in the less popular areas and uses any travel time as a sight-seeing adventure.
If you are more interested in saving money than being right in the middle of the action, keep in mind that between taxis, the subway and buses, you can get where ever you want to go in NYC. However, you will save the most money by avoiding taxis (expect late at night or for long trips). From the airport, you can take the Port Authority’s Airport Express Buses (one-way costs about – USD), it is a fast , cheap, reliable service to your hotel.
If you feel confident navigating a combination of buses and subways, you can go anywhere for just .00 USD by getting a MetroCard (it allows free transfers). If you plan to take 3 or more rides a day, then you should investigate all of the optional passes.
Also you should get a map of NYC, understand the basic layout of the city and the subway system BEFORE you go. With a little planning you can save a lot on your transportation costs while in the Bid Apple too.
So you might decide the location of your accommodation is the priority or you might lean toward saving money on your trip. Either way you decide to use to choose your discount hotel, New York City supplies you with a powerful tool. This helpful tool is the ratings and reviews (made by tourists) of any accommodation and absolutely should be used to guarantee a good night sleep regardless of what metropolitan district your accommodation is in.

I have not used priceline in New York City, but if you are a free member with the DHS Club, you can also get reward points which can be exchanged for cash. If you would like to become a free member, email me…waltergn@aol.com
Some people want to visit NYC and drop a lot of cash in the process of “living it up.” Others are looking for the best discount hotel New York City provides so that they can use their budgeted “trip money” in the most prolific way possible.
This article is written for those of you who are in quest of an inexpensive discount hotel. New York City has countless accommodations to choose from with a wide range of prices per night. Unfortunately, even a “discounted hotel” can start at USD per night. It can be very frustrating to see the majority of your “trip money” go to airfare and lodging, especially when you want to The City to be able to go out and see the sights and taste the night life.
Fortunately, most large cities around the world (including the NYC) harbor a little known secret that will help you find a fantastic way to save money on your next trip to the Big Apple. This travel deal is a hostel; and it is hands-down the best discount hotel New York City supplies its visitors.
A hostel is a low-budget accommodation that usually caters to a fun, easy-going crowd. A good description is a cross between a Bed & Breakfast and a dorm. Most hostels offer dorm-style rooms or private rooms. Here is one of the reasons why this the most affordable discount hotel New York City offers: the dorm-style rooms are CHEAP! Some go for as low as USD per night! That is an amazing deal, to be sure.
However, the private rooms are also much less expensive than a hotel room. Some start as low as USD per night. Even this is better than a regular discount hotel New York City advertises.
Let’s be honest, few New York tourists spend a lot of time in their hotel rooms. Most NYC tourists use their hotel rooms just to sleep, shower and change clothes in order to go out again.
If this is you, then think of how much extra budgeted trip money you will have to spend out on the town or in other places (maybe airfare).
There happen to be numerous hostels in New York Metropolitan area, and they are in every district of The City. As with most accommodations, location will play into the price per night.
Hostels are a clean and safe alternative to a hotel. Almost all will provide you with clean linens and towels for your use while there. And some even offer a complimentary breakfast. Most hostels have air conditioning, complimentary luggage storage available, no curfews and 24 hour reception. Some have key card access, car parking available and travel information, as well as a “local” to get advice from.
Most hostels have a kitchen and/or laundry facility that you can use too. In addition, most are now offering 24/7 internet access for those of you that need to be connected or want to write home to tell them how great this discount hotel New York City has supplied for you is!
Then there are those hostels that are top-notch and offer some rooms with a private bathroom, concierge services and access to a pool and workout facilities in addition to the other services.
Most hostels are 18 years old and up, some allow 16 years old and up and there are only a few hostels that are child-friendly, but this opens up another avenue to explore for lodging for families looking for the best discount hotel New York City can offer. For example, Hostelling International-New York is a child-friendly place.
Some are located in renovated townhomes in The City, some are located in YMCAs, and some are cozy guesthouses. Some are in residential areas, while some are positioned in the center of the action in The Big Apple.
A really entertaining hostel to stay at is the Chelsea Star Hotel (yes, it is a hostel). It happens to have been Madonna’s home in the 80′s. They have a Madonna theme room among others. The dormitory beds are about USD per night and it located close to Madison Square Garden. This is a really great discount hotel. New York City sure knows how to have fun!
There are over 40 different hostels around the Big Apple and you can book them ahead of time on the internet or over the phone. For the price, convenience and service, a hostel is truly the best discount hotel New York City affords its guests. Certainly, keep hostels in mind when planning your next trip to NYC.

In the writing of books, as all the world knows, two things are above all other things essential–the one is to know exactly when and where to leave off, and the other to be equally certain when and where to begin.
Holiday travel is often the most expensive travel for the year. Not only are flights more expensive but hotel costs can be astronomical. How can there possibly be any deals in one of the most expensive and popular cities in the world? Believe me, there are New York City hotel deals during the holidays that will amaze you. We set out to find some of them for you.
Not surprisingly, your average–rated hotel chains offer really good room rates. For instance, the SpringHill Suites near Newark International Airport get good (not great) ratings from visitors and offer pretty decent deals. We know that’s in New Jersey and, in your mind, may not qualify as a New York City hotel deal but before you turn your nose up, consider geography. Newark is just a short bus ride away from the Big Apple. It might work. As of this posting, the SpringHill Suites has a few suites available that will accommodate three people for $240 Total. That’s pretty inexpensive but, hold on, we have more deals.
The St. Giles on East 39th Street in Manhattan offers one of the best New York City hotel deals I could dig up. For the holidays, I found some rooms available for two adults for three nights for a total of only $181 per night! That’s a deal if I ever saw one. During the holidays! And the St. Giles Hotel is very close to Grand Central Station so you would be right in the heart of Manhattan. But wait, that’s not all. The St. Giles gets consistently high reviews from guests. Not good enough?
After renovations, they now consider themselves as being very eco-friendly but don’t hold your breath on what that means. It could mean they do not wash your towels and sheets every day. The term “eco-friendly” is not the same as “totally green” but we admire their intentions.
Wyndham Hotels as an international brand typically come up well on the scale of decent quality hotels. When you can find pricing deals at their hotels, it’s worth paying attention to. The Wyndham Garden in New York City also gets consistently good reviews from their guests. It’s not that I am easily influenced by others, but I am influenced by group think. When a whole lot of people are filling out survey forms giving similar answers, it must reflect something. In this case, it reflects satisfied customers.
I also spotted some rooms available at the Distrikt Hotel West 40th Street in Manhattan. We have written about the Distrikt before on this site. They offer deals and are in an excellent location – just a few minutes from Times Square. Again, for two people, they have rooms for as low as $597 total for three nights stay smack dab in the middle of the holiday season.
Do these hotel deals whet your whistle? I will continue to look for New York City hotel deals because we can always find them. Remember, it is not a real “deal” if the hotel is a dive. The hotel must be decent and positive or no deal.
This is a timely post for early September. If you haven’t heard of Cheapflights Travel Deals, now is a good time to get acquainted. They are offering 50% off on many New York City Boutique Hotels! If you are headed to New York for Fashion Week, you can get credits for shopping!
We’ve checked their deals and they have struck some hefty bargains at some nice hotels. For instance, they have negotiated a low rate of $229 per night at the Distrikt Hotel right in the heart of Times Square. That’s a super rate if you need to find cheap hotels in New York and the Distrikt is a brand new one.
Other deals they offer are at the Amsterdam Court hotel in Midtown. You can get rooms for $199, which is down from their usual $350 per night rate.
If you need to entertain a group, consider the Best Western Hospitality House. They have apartment suites with fully loaded kitchens to cook up energy food for whatever you need to do in New York.
Cheapflights apparently partners with bookit.com to secure cheap hotel deals in New York so you might as well let them leverage their clout on your behalf. We have nothing to do with Cheapflights and frankly, don’t even know anyone there, but we want to pass on good bargains when we find them.
Although New York is one of the busiest cities in the world, a lot of that busy-ness comes from people needing to find cheap hotels in New York. Don’t think that because the hotels seem to be doing a great business that they aren’t any deals. There are deals.
New York has such a grand reputation throughout the entire world yet “inexpensive” is typically not part of that reputation. So how does one participate in the New York experience without spending an arm and a leg? In other words, how do we find inexpensive ways to enjoy New York? There are ways. And there are inexpensive hotels in New York City that will help with a bargain adventure.
Following are just a few of them. We will loop back often to provide more cheap hotels in New York City as we uncover them.
Red Carpet Inn in Brooklyn, 980 Wyckoff Avenue, Brooklyn. It’s not a great hotel but if you need an inexpensive hotel and need to be in Brooklyn, close to LaGuardia Airport, this one will do just fine.
Gershwin Hotel, 7 East 27th St. This place is magical. The outside of the hotel is a bright red experience. It has great proximity to shopping, and other tourist attractions. What is interesting about the Gershwin is their flexibility with rooms and room rates. They have set aside a few rooms in their hotel for bargain rooms with bunk beds and a shared bath. It’s hard to get any more inexpensive than that. They also have rooms with barebones design and barebones pricing.
The Maritime Hotel, W 16th Street. Built in the 60’s, this hotel is obviously inspired by maritime design styles. Portholes serve as all the room windows. It does not provide a contemporary or upscale look but will be a fun escape nevertheless. If you select this hotel, you will be in Chelsea just two blocks away from the Meat Packing District.
Continental Hostel, 330 W. 95th Street. If you are interested in going the route of the Hostel, the Continental Hostel may be a good choice for you. Their rates are downright cheap. We have heard of rooms being let for $20 per night. Hard to find a more inexpensive hotel in New York than that.
The Williamsburg Hostel, 318 Bedford Ave #2. Located in Brooklyn, East Village, The Williamsburg Hostel gets rave reviews with low dorm prices. It’s clean, accommodating and has great customer service. If you don’t mind sharing a bathroom with about 5 other folks, you should check out this place. It’s very inexpensive.
Comfort Inn Central Park West, 31 West 71st St. As a chain the Comfort Inn properties offer cheap room rates. Also, as a chain, they do not provide the greatest experience. However, the Comfort Inn in Central Park is a relatively inexpensive hotel in New York and is in a great location in Upper West Side Manhattan. We found rates as low as $270 which for a hotel in Central Park is quite inexpensive.
MAve Hotel, 27th and Madison. As we have mentioned before on this site, the MAve Hotel is quite inexpensive. It too had an excellent location near the East Village. We have found room rates there to be as low as $120 a night.
