New York City Hotel Deals for the Holidays

Holiday travel is often the most expensive travel for the year.  Not only are flights more expensive but hotel costs can be astronomical. How can there possibly be any deals in one of the most expensive and popular cities in the world?  Believe me, there are New York City hotel deals during the holidays that will amaze you.  We set out to find some of them for you.

Not surprisingly, your average–rated hotel chains offer really good room rates.  For instance, the SpringHill Suites near Newark International Airport get good (not great) ratings from visitors and offer pretty decent deals.  We know that’s in New Jersey and, in your mind, may not qualify as a New York City hotel deal but before you turn your nose up, consider geography.  Newark is just a short bus ride away from the Big Apple.  It might work.  As of this posting, the SpringHill Suites has a few suites available that will accommodate three people for $240 Total.  That’s pretty inexpensive but, hold on, we have more deals.

The St. Giles on East 39th Street in Manhattan offers one of the best New York City hotel deals I could dig up.  For the holidays, I found some rooms available for two adults for three nights for a total of only $181 per night!  That’s a deal if I ever saw one.  During the holidays!  And the St. Giles Hotel is very close to Grand Central Station so you would be right in the heart of Manhattan.  But wait, that’s not all.  The St. Giles gets consistently high reviews from guests. Not good enough?

For just a few pennies more, you could stay at the Wyndham Garden Times Square South hotel.

After renovations, they now consider themselves as being very eco-friendly but don’t hold your breath on what that means.  It could mean they do not wash your towels and sheets every day.  The term “eco-friendly” is not the same as “totally green” but we admire their intentions.

Wyndham Hotels as an international brand typically come up well on the scale of decent quality hotels.  When you can find pricing deals at their hotels, it’s worth paying attention to.  The Wyndham Garden in New York City also gets consistently good reviews from their guests.  It’s not that I am easily influenced by others, but I am influenced by group think.  When a whole lot of people are filling out survey forms giving similar answers, it must reflect something.  In this case, it reflects satisfied customers.

I also spotted some rooms available at the Distrikt Hotel West 40th Street in Manhattan.  We have written about the Distrikt before on this site.  They offer deals and are in an excellent location – just a few minutes from Times Square.  Again, for two people, they have rooms for as low as $597 total for three nights stay smack dab in the middle of the holiday season.

Do these hotel deals whet your whistle?  I will continue to look for New York City hotel deals because we can always find them.  Remember, it is not a real “deal” if the hotel is a dive.  The hotel must be decent and positive or no deal.

Cheap Hotels in New York City Up in Smoke

Since 1995, smoking has been banned in most New York City restaurants. The NY Department of Health made the no-smoking regulation more extensive in 2003 by including smoking bans in bars and restaurants and any “commercial establishment” which did NOT include a “hotel or motel room rented to one or more guests.”

Since then, many hotel chains have stepped up to provide a complete ban of smoking in all of their facilities across the board.  Marriott is one chain that has been aggressively rolling out no smoking policies inside and out of nearly all of its US facilities.  Westin Hotels & Resorts and Sheraton Hotels are getting rid of smoking in their establishments too.

If smoking bothers you, and it bothers us a lot, you may wish to consider inquiring about the track record of a hotel and their attitude about smoking or non-smoking rooms.  Nowadays, most hotels offer non-smoking room options yet that does not mean the room or the premises will be smoke free.  Smoke can enter a guest room through the central air conditioning units even if it’s designated as a “no smoking” area.  It’s important to know if the room you are assigned has ever had a smoker in it.  In other words, how long has the room been designated as a “no smoking” room.

Most hotels will move you to another room if you complain about smelling smoke, yet our experience has shown that the problem exists in many hotel rooms designated for nonsmoking.

A word of caution.  When identifying your cheap hotel in New York City, take extra care to ensure that you don’t draw the line too cheaply to include an uncomfortable night’s stay in a room reeking with old smoke.  It’s more difficult for the cheap hotels to comply but their competition will welcome you with open and smoke free arms.

Tips To Find the Ideal Cheap Hotel in New York City

Are you ready for a holiday? It’s time to reward yourself with a trip to the Big Apple. You are armed with ideas, brochures, maps, travelers checks and lots of enthusiasm and ready for an adventure to New York. Now it’s time to find a cheap hotel in New York so you can afford the vacation afterall.

Touring New York can be paradise with all of the tourist opportunities.   However, New York prices may take the wind out of your sails. But remember, everything comes with a price and rent or living space is usually the hardest to tackle when it comes to New York City. When choosing a hotel to stay in New York then, it’s imperative that you ask yourself the following questions so you can determine what place is ideal.

1.) What part of New York City will you spend most of your time?
New York can be divided into several districts and these districts usually determine the range of hotel fees you’re going to encounter. Do you want your hotel to be situated in Manhattan, where most New York City attractions can be found? Or do you want to stay in a more eclectic district such as Soho and Greenwich Village?

2.) How much can you afford?
Now that you have identified a specific location in the City, the next step is to be tough about knowing how much you really want to make available for hotel expenses.  You can find Cheap Hotels in New York City and Exorbitantly Luxurious Hotels in the City and a variety of accommodations in between. Naturally, the features, amenities and location are somewhat dependent on the price.

3.) Who is coming with you?
If you’re bringing kids, then many hotels in New York City will not be good choices for you. With children along, we can suggest hotels like the Doubletree Guest Suites and the Hilton Time Square, hotels that are both famous for reliable, warm and efficient service. Pets anyone? If you’re bringing Rocky or Fluffy with you, the lists of prospective hotels in New York City that you can stay on would narrow further. Check out hotels like 70 Park Avenue Hotel and Carlyle Hotel, both offer dog-walking services.

4.) What features / services do you really need?
If you’re on a business trip, you may prefer a hotel with Internet access. Not all New York hotels offer this service.  If you’re planning to host others, your search will take a different course. Also, not all hotels in New York City come with Olympic sized pools, Grade A spas and fitness centers so you must take all these things in consideration as you try to find the cheap hotel in New York City that fits all your needs.

When you find the cheap hotel in New York City that feels right for you, take pictures and let us know about your experience.  Have a safe and fun trip!
